Birbal and the Khichdi Pot

Akbar-Birbal · retold for families

About 4 min read aloud · For grown-ups and children together

Emperor Akbar stood in cold river water while a courtier promised reward for standing so long. When Akbar shivered, the courtier stayed silent.

Birbal hung a khichdi pot from a tree, fire far below on the ground. “When heat climbs up to cook, the courtier’s promise will be as real,” he said.

Akbar laughed, understanding. He warmed the courtier with gold coins and hot khichdi by the palace fire.

Steam rose into the winter sky. “Promises must be kept close, like flame under pot,” said Birbal.

Children smell imaginary khichdi and pull blankets tighter, cozy and just.
