The Blue Jackal

Panchatantra · retold for families

About 4 min read aloud · For grown-ups and children together

Chandarava the jackal chased a deer and tumbled into a vat of blue indigo left by cloth dyers. When he crawled out, every animal bowed. “Lord Neelakantha has come!” they whispered.

The jackal liked the respect. He sat on a rock and ordered wolves to hunt for him. “I am king of the forest,” he declared in a deep voice.

One night the full moon rose. From far away, village jackals began their long howl — yip, yip, arooooo. Chandarava’s heart jumped. Without thinking, he lifted his muzzle and howled back in pure jackal song.

The deer gasped. The wolves grinned. “He is only a jackal dyed blue,” said the old bear. The animals chased the pretender until his blue fur was streaked with dust.

Chandarava escaped to a lonely ravine. He never played king again. Elders say: borrowed glory fades the moment your true voice slips out.
