Once upon a time
The Cat and the Hermit
Panchatantra · retold for families
About 4 min read aloud · For grown-ups and children together
A hermit kept a cat to protect his small store of grain from mice. The cat slept all day on the prayer mat, looking peaceful.
Mice grew bold again when the cat seemed lazy. One night they danced across the hermit’s toes.
The cat’s eyes opened — one flash of green — and the mice vanished for weeks. The hermit smiled. “You waited for the right moment.”
Travelers heard the tale and said the cat was holy. The cat simply washed her paws. She knew patience is also hunting.
Children giggle and then grow quiet: even gentle corners of life may hold hidden strength.
