Once upon a time
The Clever Wife and the Thief
Indian folk · retold for families
About 4 min read aloud · For grown-ups and children together
Husband traveled; wife lit one diya and sang softly. A thief slid through the window.
She continued folding clothes. “Welcome, brother-in-law from far — husband said you might visit. Sit, I will warm milk.”
The thief froze, ashamed to steal from such trust. He bowed and left empty-handed.
She bolted the door and told neighbors at dawn. They praised her steady voice.
Brave can mean quiet and bright, not only loud.
