Once upon a time
The Donkey in the Tiger Skin
Panchatantra · retold for families
About 4 min read aloud · For grown-ups and children together
A washerman’s donkey grew tired of carrying heavy loads. At night he found a tiger skin drying on a fence and slipped it over his back.
In the dark fields he looked fierce. Farmers dropped their sticks and ran. The donkey ate sweet lentils from every courtyard, belly growing round.
One moonlit night, feeling bold, he stood on a hill and opened his mouth to celebrate — but out came a loud HEE-HAW that echoed over the village.
“That is no tiger!” laughed a farmer. They chased the donkey, pulled off the skin, and returned him to the washerman with a stern warning.
The donkey walked home quietly. Children learn: tricks may work once, but honesty keeps you safe in the long run.
