The Faithful Mongoose

Indian folk · retold for families

About 5 min read aloud · For grown-ups and children together

A Brahmin’s wife found a baby mongoose and raised him like a son. He played with the child and slept by the cradle.

One afternoon she went to the well for water, telling the mongoose, “Guard your brother.” A cobra slid toward the cradle.

The mongoose fought until the snake lay still, mouth red. Proud, he waited at the door for praise.

The mother saw blood on his face and cried out in fear before looking inside. Only then she saw the dead snake and understood.

Stories vary on what happened next, but all agree: look fully before you judge, and remember those who protect you.
