The Gold-Giving Serpent

Indian folk · retold for families

About 4 min read aloud · For grown-ups and children together

A poor farmer found a serpent coiled near his field altar. Instead of striking, he left a bowl of milk under the neem tree.

Next dawn, a gold coin lay in the bowl. Each day he offered milk; some days coins appeared, some days only a shed skin shining like silver.

The farmer’s greedy brother swapped places and waved a stick at the serpent. “Give me gold!” he shouted. The serpent stayed silent; the bowl remained empty.

When the kind farmer returned, the serpent said softly, “Respect opens hands. Fear closed yours.” A single coin gleamed — enough, not excess.

The farmer shared bread with neighbors. Children are reminded: gentle care for creatures and places often returns in ways we cannot count.
