The Greedy Jackal and the Figs

Panchatantra · retold for families

About 3 min read aloud · For grown-ups and children together

Ripe figs hung over a cliff. A jackal leaped from a rock, grabbed a branch, and ate until his belly swelled.

He tried to climb down. The branch bent over empty air. Below, river stones waited.

A goat passed on the safe path. “Jump to me,” bleated the goat. “Too far,” whined the jackal, tail tight.

At last he dropped figs one by one until light enough to scramble back. He ate modestly ever after.

Greed makes high places lonely.
