Once upon a time
The Hare and the Partridge
Panchatantra · retold for families
About 4 min read aloud · For grown-ups and children together
A hare and a partridge shared a burrow near a trickling stream. Both claimed the water belonged to them alone.
Their shouting drew a cat in holy robes. “I shall judge fairly,” he purred, sitting between them.
He pulled them closer, closer — until the partridge fluttered up and the hare bolted. The cat showed his teeth too late.
Shaking, they drank together at dawn. “The water was always enough,” said the hare.
When arguments grow loud, watch who offers to judge — sometimes they hunger.
