Once upon a time
The Jackal and the Drum
Panchatantra · retold for families
About 3 min read aloud · For grown-ups and children together
A hungry jackal crept into a battlefield after soldiers left. Wind brushed a broken drum — boom, boom — and the jackal’s fur stood on end.
“A monster lives here,” he thought, yet hunger pushed him closer. Each gust made the drum moan again. He crouched, trembling.
At last he peeked inside. Only leather and hollow wood. No teeth, no claws — just echo.
Near the drum lay leftover rice and fruit from camp. The jackal ate his fill and slept safely in the shadow of the silent drum.
Morning light showed him the truth: fear often grows loud before we look carefully. Courage can be as small as one more step forward.
