Once upon a time
The King's Rice and the Clever Daughter
Indian folk · retold for families
About 4 min read aloud · For grown-ups and children together
A king lent a sack of rice to a farmer, then demanded double back though no grain was ever borrowed — a clerk had lied.
The farmer’s daughter asked to speak. She scattered one grain on the floor. “If this single grain bore a hundred children in a night, your debt is fair.”
The court chuckled, then grew silent. One grain cannot multiply alone; neither can nothing become debt.
The king punished the clerk and returned the farmer’s field.
Girls and boys listening learn: clear questions can untangle big lies.
