Once upon a time
The Peacock and the Crane
Panchatantra · retold for families
About 3 min read aloud · For grown-ups and children together
A peacock spread his jeweled tail in the rain. “No bird is more beautiful,” he sang.
A grey crane walked by, heading to the marsh. “Your wings are dull,” laughed the peacock.
The crane lifted effortlessly, circled clouds, and dove to catch fish for hungry chicks. “My wings are plain,” he called down, “but they feed my family.”
The peacock watched, tail folded. Beauty fed eyes; simple wings fed bellies.
Both birds share the sky — different gifts, same moon.
