The Potter Who Spoke Truth
Indian folk · retold for families
About 4 min read aloud · For grown-ups and children together
A king demanded the finest lotus vase in one night. The village potter said honestly, “Clay must dry, fire must cool — I need three days.”
Courtiers laughed at his bluntness. The king, curious, locked him in the workshop with clay and gold paint.
The potter shaped slowly, prayed over the kiln, and delivered a vase that rang like a bell when tapped.
“Why did you not flatter me?” asked the king. “Flattery cracks in heat,” said the potter. “Truth holds water.”
The king doubled his wages and banned false praise at court.
