The Rabbit on the Moon
Indian folklore · retold for families
About 4 min read aloud · For grown-ups and children together
Animals held a feast to honor the god who visits disguised as a hungry traveler. Each brought food; the rabbit, who ate only grass, had nothing but his own body to offer.
He built a small fire. “Eat me if you are hungry,” he said, and leaped toward the flames.
The god caught him midair and lifted him to the sky. “Your kindness is brighter than any gift.”
On the full moon, elders say, you can see the rabbit pounding rice or resting — a silver friend watching villages sleep.
Children wave goodnight to the moon, promising to share what little they have.
