The Sparrow and the Elephant

Panchatantra · retold for families

About 4 min read aloud · For grown-ups and children together

A proud elephant broke branches, splashed mud on nests, and blocked the stream. “I am largest,” he trumpeted. “The forest bends to me.”

A sparrow’s eggs nearly fell when he shook a tree. She flew to friends: woodpecker, frog, and a cloud of gnats.

The woodpecker pecked his tender feet. The frog croaked behind him so he stepped backward. Gnats buzzed into his ears until he dropped to his knees.

“Stop!” cried the elephant. “I cannot see, I cannot hear!” The sparrow landed on his trunk. “Size without care is only noise.”

The elephant cleared the stream and walked on soft paths. Moonlight found birds sleeping safely — and one giant friend keeping quiet.
