The Three Wise Fish

Panchatantra · retold for families

About 4 min read aloud · For grown-ups and children together

In a clear pond lived three fish: Anagatavid, who always planned ahead; Pratyutpannamati, who thought fast; and Yadbhavishya, who only hoped for luck.

Fishermen walked the bank, whispering about nets tomorrow. Anagatavid said, “We must leave tonight,” and swam through a channel to the river.

Pratyutpannamati stayed until nets appeared, then played dead among weeds until the basket tipped and he slipped back to water.

Yadbhavishya laughed at worry — until the net caught him. He was the fish sold at market.

Storytellers pause here and ask: which fish will you be when homework, exams, or rain clouds arrive? Plan a little, think a little, do not wait for magic alone.
