Once upon a time
The Washerman and the Donkey
Indian folk · retold for families
About 3 min read aloud · For grown-ups and children together
Every morning the washerman loaded clean cloth on his donkey and walked to the river. Every afternoon the donkey found the shadiest neem and stood still while bundles waited.
One day the washerman fell ill. Rain threatened the drying saris on the line. The donkey felt the wind and, for once, carried every bundle to shelter before drops fell.
The washerman recovered and hugged the donkey’s neck. “You knew when rest must end and work must begin.”
The donkey still loves shade — but now he checks the sky first.
Little listeners hear: rest is sweet, yet caring for others keeps the home dry and warm.
